Our house is situated at the top of an upslope so our driveway is very large and prominent. As you drive up to our house, the driveway dominates your view. Our 30 year old asphalt driveway was cracked and worn. Gerald removed the old driveway, regraded for proper drainage, added aggregate, compacted the base and brought in sand over the base. He then laid paving stones around the perimeter of the driveway which were anchored in concrete. Gerald carefully filled in the driveway using paving stones in a complicated random pattern that required many, many paving stones. Finally, Gerald swept a special fine sand into the joints and sprayed a water repellent sealant. The new driveway transformed our home! Now when you drive up to our house, you see a beautiful, Italian villa-like driveway which upgrades our entire house and yard! At all times, Gerald was an honest professional, timely and neat, and friendly and easy to talk to. He is a real craftsman and, on top of it all, Gerald is cost competitive! Q. What are “interlocking paving stones” (pavers)?
A. “Interlocking” pavers is a misleading term. The term “interlock” comes from the friction of joint sand between pavers. This interlock creates true pavement superiority in several ways. It creates “rotational interlock” (resistance to tipping), “horizontal interlock” (resistance to spreading), and “vertical interlock” (resistance to sinking). The pavers are set in bedding sand over a compacted aggregate base. Then sand is swept over the pavers and compacted into the joints, filling them and creating “interlock” and lasting stability.
Q. How long do I have to wait before I can walk or drive on my new pavers?
A. You don’t have to wait at all! There is no cure time with pavers so you can walk on them immediately, unlike concrete or asphalt.
Q. Are pavers slippery?
A. No! In fact, pavers exceed the slip and skid resistance standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Some sealers can reduce the effect when wet but there are sealers available that will have no effect on your pavers. You can be confident you are getting a safe, non-slip surface.
Q. What happens if I need to do a repair job below the paving? Will this leave an ugly patch mark?
A. No, this is one of the great benefits to installing paving stones. Individual stones can be removed, replaced or flipped to accommodate repairs or design changes, unlike concrete or asphalt.
Q. Do the pavers need to be sealed?
A. Sealing your paving stone project is highly recommended. Sealing protects the pavers from oil and stains, helps to stabilize the joint sand from heavy rain or cleanings, prevents vegetation growth and intensifies color characteristics.
Q. Will weeds or grass grow between the pavers?
A. If installed properly, no weeds or grass should grow up “through” the pavers. There may be times when airborne seeds can find their way onto the top of the joints and start growing in any organic material that has built up. These can often be easily pulled out or killed with weed spray. Sealing your pavers greatly reduces the likelihood of any vegetation growth.
Q. What is that white stuff on my pavers?
A. Occasionally, some pavers may arrive with a whitish residue on them. This is referred to as efflorescence. Efflorescence is a natural by-product from the production process and can be found in any concrete product. Calcium oxide inside the paver reacts with water and forms calcium hydroxide. This seeps to the surface, reacts with the carbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate, a whitish residue. This will wear off over time or can be removed with a restorative cleanser.
Q. Do you work on weekends?
A. Yes, we do work on Saturdays, if necessary.

Happy Spring! Hope this finds you well and, like us, looking forward to warmer days.

New Quarry Stone Pavers in Antioch!

As promised...this custom designed front yard is a knockout! The Circle Pattern Kit patio blends beautifully into the curved stone walkway. We love how the homeowners have added a charming bistro table set and a water feature. What a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors!
Always Hire a Licensed Contractor

When hiring someone to do certain home improvement projects for you, it is important to hire qualified professionals. That means licensed contractors who know what they're doing and can offer you peace of mind knowing you have some recourse in case things don't go smoothly. Case in point: A nice woman recently hired a "friend of a relative who knows how to do pavers" ( you know how that goes!) to tear out her old concrete driveway and walkways to her front porch and side yards and replace them with new interlocking pavers. Since he wasn't a licensed contractor and had no tools or transportation the client would be in charge of providing these, but figured the lower cost of the job would be worth it. She bought tools at the "contractors" request, she drove to the store and purchased supplies and she even picked him up at the bus stop! The work at her home proceeded at a snails pace and her family and neighbor's wondered if it would EVER get finished. A year passed! She expressed her concerns to the paver supply company who in turn referred her to us. The experts at ATCO Supply told her we would give her a fair estimate and would work hard to resolve her issues. Well, we met with this homeowner, surveyed the partially completed and poorly done work and set to correct the many new problems on the site. Within one week, GB Duarte Construction had re-graded the entire driveway, all the paths and had set all new pavers, giving this nice lady exactly what she had wanted all along. She never once needed to make a supply purchase or pick us up! You should never need to do those things when working with professionals. Our client was thrilled with her new driveway and walkways and couldn't believe how easy the process was. Had she hired a real contractor from the beginning she could have really saved more than she spent!

A small project with big impact! Pavers are the perfect choice for updating this side yard. We'll remove the old stepping stonesand gravel and fill the area with Cobble Stones to dramatically improve both appearance and functionality. This will be a quick fix with long lasting value!

To update this front yard and give it the Tuscan feel that mirrors the inside of this lovely home the homeowner wants a fluid, inviting entry and patio. To replace her "ready to retire" old wooden patio/porch she chose a gorgeous Quarry Stone in a circle pattern that will curve into her new winding walkway. The first step is to remove all the old material so the ground below can be prepared.
It may not look too exciting right here, but this important step makes all the difference in the lifelong quality of the project.
That's the boss, Gerald, standing where the gorgeous new circular patio will be. And here's Dave spreading the rock base where the Quarry Stones will be installed near the entry. Next they'll compact the rock and cover it with bedding sand...all ready for the pavers!
